Havre de Grace

Havre de Grace’s waterfront connects a promenade, a seasonal lighthouse climb and a museum that interprets the region’s waterways.

Havre de Grace rewards a waterfront visit that leaves room for history beyond the view. The promenade described by Visit Harford follows the water from Tydings Park toward Concord Point Lighthouse. It provides a clear starting framework for exploring, but a walk, a tower climb and a museum visit each have different access conditions. Choose which matters most before setting the day’s schedule.

A lighthouse visit has limits

The Friends of Concord Point Lighthouse publish seasonal visiting information for the tower and Keeper’s House Museum at 714 Concord Street. Regular interior visits are offered on weekends from April through October, with separate Saturday and Sunday hours. The operator lists November through March as closed except for special events. Admission during those seasonal hours is free. The tower climb requires visitors to be at least 42 inches tall and involves both steps and a ladder. It is not an interchangeable substitute for a level waterfront walk; check the operator’s current notices and your party’s needs before promising the climb.

Waterways as routes to freedom

The Havre de Grace Maritime Museum’s permanent exhibits include “The Underground Railroad: Other Voices of Freedom.” Its regional account looks at the Chesapeake Bay and Susquehanna River as routes used by people escaping slavery, and at the people who assisted them. Ferries, boats and river crossings become part of a human story, rather than scenery alone.

That gives a visit two useful scales: the immediate waterfront outside and the larger network of waterways interpreted inside. Allow separate time for museum admission and opening arrangements rather than assuming the promenade’s availability means the museum is open. For families with different interests or mobility needs, select the walk, keeper’s house or exhibit on its own merits. No particular activity needs to stand in for the entire city.
