Aberdeen Proving Ground
Aberdeen Proving Ground is a federal research and testing installation with separate northern and southern areas and destination-specific visitor procedures.
Aberdeen Proving Ground has shaped Harford County through more than a century of military research and testing. The Army’s installation history dates its establishment to 1917, when the United States needed a larger site to test wartime equipment. Edgewood Arsenal became part of APG in 1971, bringing the two areas under one installation name.
Find the organization first
The official tenant directory includes communications and electronics, research laboratories, test-and-evaluation organizations and Army contracting offices. For a professional visit, those distinctions are more useful than navigating to “APG” alone: confirm the organization, building and host before choosing a route.
Two areas, separate arrivals
APG’s visitor guidance distinguishes Aberdeen Area/APG North from Edgewood Area/APG South; they are not connected inside the installation. Visitors use the Maryland Boulevard/MD 715 entrance for North and the Hoadley Road/MD 24 entrance for South. The Army provides an advance pass process, so arrange the visit before arriving at a gate.
Employees, visiting vendors and relocating families should begin with their receiving organization’s instructions. A map pin, event invitation or nearby hotel address does not establish permission to enter the installation.
