District
APG Edgewood Area
APG’s Edgewood Area is a federal research district where chemical and biological defense work connects with regional science education.
The Edgewood Area is the southern part of Aberdeen Proving Ground, with a research identity rooted in the former Edgewood Arsenal. One of its major institutions is the DEVCOM Chemical Biological Center, which develops and tests technologies for non-medical chemical and biological defense. Scientists, engineers and technicians work on detection, protection and related defense capabilities.
Connections beyond the laboratory
The center’s education program gives local families and educators a useful point of connection. It describes virtual and classroom STEM activities for schools in the surrounding Harford and Cecil County communities, alongside information about student apprenticeships. Teachers can use the program’s contact route to discuss a suitable activity; participation follows the program’s application or scheduling process.
Plan for APG South
The center’s published visitor guide explicitly identifies its location as APG South. Arrange a visit with the host, obtain the required access instructions and confirm the actual building before traveling. Center rules also address portable electronic devices, so ask about equipment you intend to bring.
For local orientation, distinguish the Edgewood research area from the surrounding civilian community. Its laboratories are working federal facilities with controlled access, even when their research has a public education component.
