Neighborhood
Chartwood
Get to know Chartwood’s original streets, voluntary community association and nearby public recreation, separate from neighboring Chartwell.
Chartwood has its own neighborhood identity and voluntary community association. The association’s history places the original early-1960s development on Faircastle Avenue, Wellerburn Avenue, Benfield Boulevard and West Benfield Road. Those street references give a more useful starting point than assuming that the similar names Chartwood and Chartwell describe the same development. Chartwood history.
How the association works
The association describes its role as representing neighborhood interests, coordinating activities and maintaining community landscaping and property. Its voluntary structure is worth understanding when comparing a property with one in a development that has a different dues or covenant system. Ask for the documents that apply to the actual address.
Historical names can be misleading
The association’s account uses “West Severna Park” for a larger tract acquired in the 1950s that later included Chartwood, Chartwell and Fairwinds on the Severn. That historical usage does not make those present-day neighborhoods interchangeable. Keep the contemporary name and property identity separate in searches and home comparisons.
A public recreation option
Nearby Kinder Farm Park is in Millersville and provides trails, a farm area and a playground with county-managed entry. It offers a way to plan an outing independent of a private club or waterfront association. Check the park map and pass information and compare the route from the specific Chartwood street you are considering.
