Neighborhood
President's Hill
President’s Hill is a small Annapolis neighborhood with a documented nineteenth-century street pattern and a community mural project on Madison Place. Start with its history and the artist’s own account.
A small neighborhood behind West Street
President’s Hill has a street pattern that is easy to study before visiting. Historian Michael P. Parker’s research summary identifies Munroe Court, Madison Place, Hill Street and Jefferson Place between West Street, Taylor Avenue and the former railway right-of-way. He traces its residential development to the early 1890s. Those named streets give a more useful starting point than treating all of central Annapolis as one historic neighborhood.
Read the story of the Madison Place mural
Future History Now documents a 2016 mural project at 4 Madison Place, created with Jóvenes Artistas. The design combines portraits of James Madison, Theodore Roosevelt and Abraham Lincoln with a geometric background built from a triangular stencil. The project’s photographs and artist account explain how a repeating pattern creates depth around the historical figures. They also provide a way to explore the work online before looking for it locally.
Connect with neighborhood life
The City lists Presidents Hill among its community associations. For neighborhood activities, use association notices and invitations. Residential streets and community events serve the people who live here, alongside the shops and visitor destinations on the adjoining West Street corridor.
