Historic Downtown Annapolis
Follow downtown Annapolis through its state-government landmarks, historic streets and changing waterfront access.
Historic Downtown Annapolis brings the state capital and the waterfront into the same outing. State Circle, Main Street and the streets around the harbor give you different starting points: a government or history visit, a shopping stop, or time near the boats. Treat those as connected destinations, with their own entrances and access arrangements.
Start with one anchor
The Maryland State House visitor page explains self-guided visits and the separate process for legislative group tours. Check it before a visit that depends on entering a building. The city's business-district guide places government offices, shops, historic buildings and academic institutions within the downtown mix; a district name does not mean every site has the same public access.
Plan around the waterfront work
City Dock remains a construction-sensitive part of a downtown trip. In its August 25, 2026 update, the city projected the Ego Alley boardwalk reopening for March 2027, City Dock Park and the Maritime Welcome Center for July 2027, and additional work into spring 2028. Those are project targets. Check the latest access notices before making a waterfront stop the fixed point of a visit.
Choose the route back, too
The city trolley page describes separate Maryland Avenue/State Circle and Dock Street loops. Its operating information is seasonal and weather dependent, so check the service available on your date. Decide where to leave the car and which streets you want to explore before filling the day with stops.
