St. Mary's County stretches across Southern Maryland's peninsula, with the Potomac, Patuxent and Chesapeake shaping its waterfronts and travel routes. Leonardtown, Lexington Park and St. Mary's City offer three useful starting points: a town center and bayfront, a community closely tied to naval aviation, and an archaeological landscape beside the St. Mary's River. Each deserves its own visit and its own practical plan.
Three distinct starting points
Leonardtown is the county's only incorporated municipality. Its historic center and arts district lead toward Leonardtown Wharf on Breton Bay. A walk through town and a waterfront stop can form a manageable first visit; plan parking before unloading a kayak or arranging a group outing.
Lexington Park sits beside the main station at Naval Air Station Patuxent River, home to major naval aviation commands. The base and the surrounding community have different access rules. Lexington Manor Passive Park is a public option for paths, community gardens, art and disc golf without making a military installation part of the itinerary.
St. Mary's City centers on Maryland's first colonial capital. Historic St. Mary's City presents living history and archaeology across several sites, including St. John's Site Museum and the Struggle for Freedom exhibit. Use the museum map to select exhibits and entrances rather than relying on one generic destination pin.
A county shaped by the water
At the southern end, Point Lookout State Park brings together Chesapeake and Potomac scenery, recreation and difficult Civil War history. Check the state park's current information for the facilities you intend to use. A shoreline on a map is not automatically a public swimming area or boat launch.
Leonardtown Wharf provides another public waterfront starting point, with Breton Bay views at the end of Washington Street. For a paddle, confirm the correct launch, available parking and a suitable return plan. Weather and tidal conditions matter even when a route looks short.
Getting around and finding services
St. Mary's Transit System publishes separate routes connecting Leonardtown, Lexington Park, California, Solomons and other destinations. Some routes and weekend patterns differ. Build the trip from the current route index and check the return service, particularly for a museum visit or a journey across the Patuxent to Calvert County.
For a move, begin school and bus questions with St. Mary's County Public Schools and the exact address. Leonardtown's municipal services apply within town limits; other addresses are served through county arrangements. Keep the actual workplace or base entrance, school destination and regular errands in the same route comparison. Countywide labels cannot tell you how those daily trips will work.
