Leonardtown

A historic town center and arts district leading to Breton Bay at Leonardtown Wharf.

Waterfront promenade and wharf in Leonardtown, Maryland

Leonardtown’s town center and Breton Bay waterfront make a useful pair for a first visit. The square and surrounding streets introduce its civic and arts life; Washington Street leads toward Leonardtown Wharf. Choose a walking route and parking place before heading downhill with equipment or a group, then leave time for the return trip.

A county town with a long history

The town’s visitor history traces the establishment of a town and courthouse here to 1708. It was first called Seymour Town and later renamed Leonard Town. Its subsequent role as a port and steamboat landing helps explain why the town center and waterfront remain connected.

The town also offers a walking tour and information about its arts district. Use those resources to choose buildings, galleries or events that interest you rather than expecting every historic property to be open to visitors. A specific event or exhibition can be a good reason for a return visit.

Use the right waterfront access

Leonardtown Wharf Public Park is on Breton Bay at 22500 Washington Street. Maryland’s water-access inventory identifies a soft launch and very limited parking, rather than a conventional trailer ramp. If you are bringing a kayak or arranging a paddle, check current town information for the appropriate launch and unloading plan before arriving.

A waterfront walk needs less preparation. You can make the wharf the destination of a short outing, while keeping a longer water trip for a day when equipment, conditions and transportation have been planned.

Library and everyday connections

Leonardtown Library is at 23630 Hayden Farm Lane, a different destination from the historic center. Its makerspace and art gallery add to ordinary library services. Check its program calendar for the activity you want and confirm any reservation requirement.

St. Mary’s Transit System connects Leonardtown with Lexington Park through California and Great Mills routes; separate schedules cover other days and evening travel. Choose the timetable that matches your actual trip and check the return journey.

Research an address, not just the town name

Leonardtown is St. Mary’s County’s only incorporated municipality. Verify whether a prospective home or business is inside town limits before directing municipal-service questions. For schools, use the county’s address-based school lookup and confirm the assignment with the district, particularly near a boundary or in a new subdivision. This keeps town services, county services and school attendance from being mistaken for one shared boundary.
