Route 50 / Bay Bridge Corridor
The Route 50 and Bay Bridge corridor is Maryland’s shore-to-shore gateway, where current traffic information matters more than a fixed travel-time estimate.
The Route 50 / Bay Bridge corridor links the Annapolis side of the Chesapeake with Kent Island and the Eastern Shore. It is a travel corridor spanning several communities, so use the actual destination and exit when planning a stop.
Check conditions before departure
The Maryland Transportation Authority’s Bay Bridge site brings together traffic updates, toll information and lane-control guidance. On the overhead signals, a green arrow marks an open lane, a yellow X directs drivers to leave the lane and a red X marks a closed lane. Follow the signals in use during your crossing.
MDTA’s travel-planning page offers directional off-peak suggestions and links to live conditions. It also asks through travelers to remain on US 50 so local roads remain available to residents and first responders. Those recommendations can inform a departure choice, but do not guarantee a journey time.
Local connections are still evolving
Queen Anne’s County’s pedestrian and bicycle crossing study considers ways to connect the Cross Island and South Island trails across US 50/301. The published alternatives are proposals being studied. They should not be read as a completed new crossing. For a walk or ride on Kent Island, select an existing trail entrance and verify the route separately from your drive across the bay.
