Historic Stevensville

Preserved homes, a railway station and small galleries put Kent Island’s transport and community history into a compact downtown visit.

Historic Stevensville is the part of Stevensville to explore for preserved buildings and working arts spaces. The district’s downtown guide connects the Cray House, old post office, bank, Christ Church and railway station with the shops that occupy the center today. Each building tells a different part of island life.

Look closely at the buildings

The Cray House is an early nineteenth-century example of post-and-plank construction. The station recalls a different route across the region: after the rail terminus moved to Love Point in 1902, Stevensville became the first stop from that end. The preserved station was later moved to its present site. These are historical sites, with interior access organized separately from a walk around downtown.

Add a gallery visit

The arts district identifies galleries, artist workshops and the Kent Island Federation of Arts as reasons to stop. Combining one exhibition with a few historic sites makes a focused visit without treating every storefront as a museum.

Choose a tour date

The Kent Island Heritage Society calendar separates historic-site tour dates from Heritage Center museum openings. These are seasonal schedules, so choose a specific published date and check the society’s latest notices before planning an interior visit. An arts-district event or an open shop does not by itself confirm that the preserved buildings are open for tours.
