Chester
Chester pairs Kent Island heritage at the Kirwan property with a useful Cross Island Trail entrance at Macuum Creek.
Chester brings together a piece of Kent Island’s rural history and an entrance to its modern trail network. Two places give a visit a clear starting point: the James E. Kirwan property and the Macuum Creek trailhead. They offer different ways to understand the area, one through preserved buildings and the other through time outside.
A house, store and farm
The Kent Island Heritage Society maintains the James E. Kirwan House, General Store and Museum and its farm in Chester. That collection is a useful counterpoint to the railway and commercial sites in Historic Stevensville. Consult the society for tour dates rather than assuming that the house and store keep daily retail hours.
Join the trail at Macuum Creek
The county lists a Cross Island Trail entrance at 1701 Piney Creek Road, with parking and restrooms. It provides a specific Chester starting point for the larger east–west route. Choose a turnaround suited to your outing; the entire trail extends beyond Chester.
Read waterfront addresses carefully
The Kent Narrows dining directory includes businesses with Chester addresses on the western side of the waterfront district, including the Dock House on Piney Narrows Road. Use the actual entrance and street when arranging a meal or meeting. Chester and Kent Narrows can appear together in an address and visitor description without making every destination part of one continuous downtown.
