Bush River Area
The Bush River area includes freshwater wetlands and environmental-learning destinations around Otter Point Creek.
At the headwaters of the Bush River, Otter Point Creek offers a way to understand southern Harford’s tidal landscape. Maryland DNR’s reserve overview describes a component of the Chesapeake Bay National Estuarine Research Reserve with freshwater marsh, forest and wooded wetlands. The Anita C. Leight Estuary Center provides a public education connection to that landscape.
Choose a named destination
The county lists the estuary center at 700 Otter Point Road in Abingdon. Use that address for center programs and visitor information. DNR recommends checking hours and calling ahead because some reserve areas require a reservation; the river’s broad shoreline should not be treated as one continuous public park.
Restoration alongside recreation
The county’s stream-restoration page for the center reports completed construction to stabilize eroding banks and plant native trees and shrubs. It offers an example of the work involved in caring for a wetland setting, beyond simply preserving a view.
Plan around the center’s current program or trail information, then follow the access rules for the specific site. A nature walk, an educational event and a trip onto the water involve different preparations and should be arranged separately.
