Winchester-on-the-Severn

Winchester-on-the-Severn combines a private community waterfront with a documented history of neighborhood stormwater work. Beach use, gatherings and dog access follow distinct association rules.

A north-shore Severn community

Winchester-on-the-Severn sits on the river’s north shore outside central Annapolis. The community association traces the name to Jacob Winchester, who purchased land here in the nineteenth century. A volunteer board and committees manage shared neighborhood matters, including the waterfront facilities.

Understand which beach you are using

The association’s beach rules limit the beach and pier to members and authorized guests. The Main Beach excludes animals; a separate community dog beach is identified at the bottom of Severn Drive. These are neighborhood facilities, rather than public beaches. Members planning a gathering should use the association’s reservation process for tables and grills and retain space for other members.

A local example of managing runoff

The University of Maryland’s MOST Center documents a native-plant rain garden installed before 2013 in response to an eroding drainage area affecting Chase Creek. Its account describes community involvement and ongoing maintenance. It is a useful local example for residents interested in how rainwater from streets reaches the river. Read it as a completed historical project, separate from later restoration proposals or work elsewhere in the neighborhood.
