Pumphrey
Pumphrey combines a public recreation park on Belle Grove Road with a documented place in Anne Arundel’s African American school history. Park visits and historical research begin with different resources.
A local outdoor starting point
Pumphrey Park is at 5757 Belle Grove Road; the county lists its address under Brooklyn Park. It brings together a playground, basketball and tennis courts, baseball facilities, trails and picnic space. The park’s sunrise-to-sunset schedule makes it a useful daytime option for a short walk or an outing with children.
Pumphrey’s school history
The Maryland Historical Trust’s Rosenwald-school record dates Pumphrey’s school to 1922–23. It belongs to the larger history of African American communities building educational opportunities during segregation. The document includes historical photographs and countywide context, making it a better starting point for understanding the school than an undated listing or a building name alone.
Connect the local story to the county
The county’s Rosenwald history page explains the program and the involvement of local Black communities. Read it alongside the Pumphrey entry to understand how this particular school fits the wider network. These are research resources, not promises of current interior access. For an ordinary outdoor visit, use the named county park entrance rather than a historic-school address.
