Mayo
Mayo’s peninsula offers public shoreline parks with distinct beach, trail and seasonal access arrangements at Mayo Beach and Beverly Triton.
Mayo’s peninsula setting makes the shoreline an important part of local life. For public access, two county parks offer different experiences. Mayo Beach Park at 4150 Honeysuckle Drive sits at the mouth of the South River. Its sandy beach, playground, picnic areas and cartop launch can support a day by the water, but visitors must carry equipment from parking to the beach.
A park shared with adaptive programs
Mayo Beach also hosts the county’s adaptive day camp. Its summer weekday schedule limits general access during camp hours, and summer weekends and holidays require reservations. Use the current park calendar when planning a visit. The county reports that the new camp and maintenance building opened in June 2026; that completed facility is separate from other long-term improvements proposed for the peninsula.
Trails and Chesapeake shoreline
Beverly Triton Nature Park at 1202 Triton Beach Road combines Chesapeake frontage with natural trails through woods and around brackish ponds. It has its own parking fee, seasonal reservation system and closure notices. Those notices matter in autumn, when scheduled deer-management mornings can delay opening.
Choose the park that fits the activity, then check that park’s current access page. A beach visit, a trail walk and a paddle launch require different preparation. Before entering the water, review posted county advisories; the existence of a designated swimming beach is not a report on that day’s water conditions.
