Lothian

Lothian links Solomons Island Road community facilities with the wider Patuxent landscape, including Jug Bay’s distinct sanctuary and preserve entrances.

Lothian’s community resources range from a roadside recreation park to protected wetlands in the wider Patuxent landscape. Old South Park at 5385 Solomons Island Road offers fields, trails and a restroom, with sunrise-to-sunset hours. It is a different kind of destination from the research and conservation lands farther toward the river.

Choose the correct Jug Bay entrance

The Jug Bay Wetlands Sanctuary lists its main visitor center and trails at 1361 Wrighton Road with a Lothian address. The sanctuary opens on selected days, and its parking lot and trails close with the site. Glendening Nature Preserve has separate entrances on Plummer Lane and Wrighton Road, with a different daily schedule. A Lothian mailing address alone is therefore not enough to choose the right gate or plan a visit.

The sanctuary’s visitor FAQ makes the activity differences clear. Pets are not allowed in the main sanctuary, while Glendening permits leashed dogs. The sanctuary proper does not allow personal boat launches, fishing or swimming; the operator identifies other properties for permitted water access. Its marsh boardwalk and woodland routes suit a visit focused on observing the landscape.

A practical local plan

Use Old South Park for the facilities it actually provides, and use Jug Bay’s maps and calendar for a wetland outing or guided program. Keeping those destinations separate helps avoid arriving at a conservation site expecting the rules of an ordinary neighborhood park.
