Londontowne

Londontowne pairs a year-round waterfront neighborhood with nearby Historic London Town, where archaeology and gardens illuminate the South River’s past.

Londontowne brings together two related but distinct stories: a modern waterfront community and the earlier South River port interpreted at Historic London Town. The London Towne Property Owners Association describes the residential community as the former Woodland Beach vacation resort, which evolved into a year-round neighborhood. Incorporated in 1932, the association manages community parks, beaches, docks, ramps and its clubhouse.

Resident shoreline and public history

Property ownership brings association membership. Its waterfront facilities are managed for the community, and association notices require guests to be accompanied by an owner or bona fide tenant. Those amenities should be distinguished from the public museum and gardens at 839 Londontown Road.

Historic London Town & Gardens offers a paid-admission visit combining archaeology, horticulture and the historic area. Guided walks include the William Brown House, whose interior access may depend on tour times and staffing. It is a useful way to see how buildings and excavated evidence reveal the earlier settlement.

Read more than one life into the site

The museum’s interpretive work considers the different people who lived, worked and traveled through the house, including enslaved people whose experiences are less fully represented in surviving written records. That broader history adds depth to a visit. For planning, use the museum’s admission page for the historic property and the association’s guidance for resident amenities; the shared place-name does not make their access arrangements interchangeable.
