Edgewater
Edgewater connects South River neighborhoods with public library services, woodland trails and the Smithsonian’s nearby Rhode River research campus.
Edgewater’s local resources span the Central Avenue corridor and the roads leading toward the South and Rhode rivers. A useful first stop is Edgewater Library at 25 Stepneys Lane, in the South County Government Center beside the senior center. Alongside books and meeting rooms, the branch offers public computers, printing and a caregiver workstation with an attached playpen. Fishing poles are available to borrow through its catalog.
Different kinds of outdoor space
South River Farm Park at 3553 Loch Haven Drive offers a rustic outing: natural-surface trails, river views, picnic tables and a small parking area. Bicycles are not allowed on its natural trails. The county’s September 2026 project update still places new water-access amenities in design, so plan around the existing paths rather than an anticipated launch or new pier.
At 647 Contees Wharf Road, the Smithsonian Environmental Research Center provides another nearby destination, with public trails and a nonmotorized boat launch on the Rhode River. Use the designated visitor parking and mapped routes through this working research campus. The Reed Education Center atrium currently closes on weekends and holidays, although rear restrooms remain accessible.
These resources suit different plans: an indoor family stop, a woodland walk or a visit to a research landscape. Selecting the actual entrance matters more than relying on the broad Edgewater address alone.
