BWI Airport District

The BWI Airport District brings together terminal access, separate regional rail connections and an outdoor perimeter trail. Choosing the correct station or trail entrance is the first useful planning step.

Two different rail connections

The BWI Airport District is organized around a regional transport hub, so the first useful distinction is between its rail facilities. The airport’s Light Rail station is immediately outside the terminal’s lower level beside Concourse E. It is the terminal-side starting point for Light Rail travel toward Baltimore and other stations on that network.

Allow for the rail-station shuttle

MARC Penn Line and Amtrak trains use a separate rail station linked to the terminal by a free airport shuttle. Follow the designated baggage-claim pickup signs when returning from the terminal. Include that transfer when planning a train connection; the rail station and the terminal Light Rail stop are not interchangeable destinations.

Use the outdoor trail as its own outing

The BWI Hiker-Biker Trail circles the airport and passes the Dixon Aircraft Observation Area. A spur reaches the terminal near the international concourse and Light Rail, where the airport identifies bicycle parking. Decide whether your outing is a trail visit or a terminal trip, then select the relevant access point. Trail length and rail connections do not establish a tested journey time or a convenient layover itinerary.
