La Plata

A Charles County town center with courthouse-area markets, library services and nearby history.

La Plata brings together Charles County’s civic center, a seasonal market and community arts. Washington Avenue, the courthouse area and Charles Street offer practical reference points for a first visit. Build an outing around a real destination or scheduled activity, then use the rest of the trip to learn how the town center connects with everyday services.

Market days and the courthouse area

The La Plata Farmers Market operates seasonally behind the courthouse, with produce, baked goods, local products and makers among its offerings. The town gives 209 Washington Avenue as a navigation address. Check the current dated schedule: the Wednesday season and Saturday season do not necessarily end at the same time.

A market visit is also a useful way to distinguish a scheduled community activity from the normal weekday business of the civic center. If you have a county appointment, locate its specific office and parking independently rather than assuming the market’s address is the right entrance.

Theater and library life

The Port Tobacco Players theater is at 508 Charles Street in downtown La Plata. The organization’s name does not mean its theater is in Port Tobacco. Choose a performance from its current season and review its parking map; some neighboring lots are unavailable to theater visitors.

The La Plata library branch at 2 Garrett Avenue is another public anchor. Its program calendar and library services provide reasons to use the town beyond an event or appointment. A library stop and a walk around the center offer a manageable introduction without trying to cover every part of Charles County.

A separate history trip

Thomas Stone National Historic Site is nearby at Port Tobacco, outside this downtown outing. The National Park Service preserves Haberdeventure, with a historic house, outbuildings, cemetery and nature trails. Check the park’s visitor information for open areas and operating days, then plan the drive as a distinct part of the day.

Daily travel and town boundaries

VanGO’s 301 Connector links Waldorf and La Plata. Its local La Plata route serves destinations along US 301, including public services. Look up the stop for the particular building and your return trip.

La Plata’s incorporated boundary matters when researching services for a home or business. Confirm the property’s jurisdiction with the town, and use the county school locator for school research by address and year. A mailing address is a starting point, not a complete account of the services attached to a property.
