Woodstock
Woodstock’s Mt. Pleasant farmstead combines public trails, environmental education and an interpreted record of rural family life.
The Howard County Conservancy’s Mt. Pleasant property gives Woodstock a substantial place for outdoor learning at 10520 Old Frederick Road. The farmstead covers 232 acres with five miles of trails, and the grounds are free to visit from sunrise to sunset. The nature-center building has its own schedule, separate from access to the paths.
A farm preserved for the future
The Conservancy’s family history follows the Browns and the buildings they used and changed. Sisters Ruth and Frances Brown, both longtime teachers, left Mt. Pleasant in preservation after their deaths in 1990 and 1992. Their decision connects today’s educational work with the farm’s earlier household and agricultural life.
A self-guided walking tour adds another layer to a visit. Signs at historic-building stations provide web links and scannable codes with interpretation, and a downloadable map lets visitors choose their own order. The blacksmith shop is one of those stops.
Mt. Pleasant can therefore support both a trail outing and a closer look at how a working rural property evolved. Scheduled programs offer a further way to learn about the landscape and its wildlife.
