Route 1 Corridor
Howard County’s Route 1 corridor combines homes, freight movement and long-established commerce along Washington Boulevard.
Route 1, also called Washington Boulevard, carries a long transportation and commercial history through eastern Howard County. The county’s corridor account traces its connection with the Washington–Baltimore turnpike and the B&O Railroad. Warehouses, trucking operations, lodging and roadside businesses reflect the road’s role before the development of Columbia.
The planning corridor reaches east toward Anne Arundel County and west to I-95. It is broader than the properties immediately facing the highway. A corridor plan was adopted in 2023 alongside HoCo By Design, providing a framework for following future land-use and revitalization decisions.
A road serving different purposes
The county’s transportation overview describes a mixture of residential, commercial, industrial and institutional uses. Routes 32, 175 and 100 cross the corridor, connecting local trips with regional freight movement. That combination helps explain why an ordinary errand and a commercial delivery can share the same road environment.
For residents and businesses, a useful approach is to follow the specific community, property or transport project involved. The Route 1 label gives regional context, while individual addresses and project documents supply the details needed for a particular visit or decision.
