Community
Glenelg
Glenelg’s crossroads and nearby manor history explain a community name that also appears on a separate independent-school campus.
Glenelg’s historical center is the meeting of Triadelphia Road and Ten Oaks Road. A county historic-property survey identifies that crossroads and connects the community’s name with nearby Glenelg Manor. The account describes a rural place whose identity developed through roads, a post office and surrounding estates, rather than a neatly bounded municipal center.
The manor’s story adds a distinctive architectural thread. Glenelg Country School’s own history describes the building’s nineteenth-century remodeling to resemble a Scottish castle. That history belongs to a particular property; it does not make every place using the Glenelg name part of the same campus.
The school and the wider community
Glenelg Country School opened in 1954 and purchased the manor and fifty surrounding acres in 1963. Its present address is 12793 Folly Quarter Road, Ellicott City. The independent school’s buildings and grounds have expanded over time, while the older manor remains part of its institutional story.
Keeping the crossroads, manor and school address distinct makes local history easier to follow. School visits belong within the institution’s arrangements; its name alone says nothing about a household’s public-school assignment.
