Village

Uniontown

Uniontown’s historic streetscape follows an old travel route through rural Carroll County, with an academy and community buildings among its landmarks.

Uniontown’s shape is part of its story. The Maryland Historical Trust’s district description follows a village arranged along Uniontown Road, with a shorter extension on Trevanion Road. Houses, former commercial buildings, churches and schools grew beside a route that once connected Baltimore with communities farther west.

A village visible in its buildings

The historic district, listed in the National Register in 1986, records development from the late eighteenth century into the early twentieth. Log, frame and brick construction appear in the survey, along with barns and other small buildings that connect village households to the surrounding agricultural landscape.

For an interested visitor, the district inventory is a useful companion to viewing the streetscape from public space. It identifies individual resources and helps distinguish houses, former stores and institutional buildings without assuming their interiors are open.

Learning about the academy

The Uniontown Academy nomination provides a separate account of the village’s educational heritage and preservation work. Its historical documentation adds depth to the building’s place in local life.

Plan any interior visit with the relevant owner or organization. Historic survey forms describe the circumstances when they were prepared and should not be used as current opening hours.
