Neighborhood

West Arlington

West Arlington’s houses and community identity are marked by an 1899 water tower and neighborhood green space.

West Arlington is a Baltimore City neighborhood adjoining Grove Park, Woodmere, Howard Park, Dolfield and Dorchester. Live Baltimore’s community listing identifies the West Arlington Improvement Association as a contact for neighborhood activity. That local association is a useful starting point for understanding the area beyond the broad west Baltimore label.

Its distinctive historic landmark is the West Arlington Water Tower at 4025 Ridgewood Avenue. Baltimore Heritage dates the structure to 1899, when it supplied water to the developing community. By the early 1930s it had fallen out of use; a proposed demolition did not go ahead. The surviving tower helps explain how infrastructure and suburban development shaped this part of Baltimore. Treat it as an exterior landmark, not an invitation to enter or climb.

Penhurst Park, listed by the City at 4004 Penhurst Avenue, supplies another local point of reference. For a neighborhood visit, distinguish that public park destination from the tower property and surrounding homes. The association can help with current community activities, while a park map alone should not be used to assume scheduled events, sports access or building-entry permission.
