Neighborhood

Union Square

Union Square offers a park-centered architectural walk, the appointment-based Mencken House museum and a local neighborhood calendar for community gatherings.

Walk around the park

Union Square Park fills the block between Lombard, Stricker, Gilmor and Hollins streets. The neighborhood association dates the land donation to 1847 and describes the paths, pavilion, fountain and lamps that shape its Victorian character. The surrounding streets give a manageable starting point for an exterior architecture walk, with the park as a clear meeting place.

Reserve the Mencken House

At 1524 Hollins Street, the Mencken House connects one of the area’s rowhouses with the writer’s life and work. As checked in October 2026, the operator lists Saturdays from 1–4 p.m. by appointment only. Arrange the visit first; the house’s presence on a historic map does not establish unscheduled museum access.

Use the neighborhood calendar

The Union Square Association calendar is the place to look for current community gatherings. Choose a dated event or contact the organizer about participation, then combine it with the park or a booked house visit. This keeps the outing grounded in what is actually scheduled.
