Neighborhood
Mount Washington
Mount Washington brings a village center, neighborhood parks and a volunteer-managed arboretum into northwest Baltimore City.
Mount Washington has a village shopping and restaurant center, a Light Rail station and housing that ranges from apartments to larger detached homes. CHAI’s local description places these features together, while the City’s neighborhood boundary extends into residential streets adjoining Cheswolde, Coldspring and other northwest communities.
The Mount Washington Improvement Association’s park guide gives several useful starting points. Northwest Park, at 2101 West Rogers Avenue, has playing fields and a playground, with the Jones Falls Trail passing along its western side. Irvin Luckman Memorial Park is bounded by Glen, Rockwood, Merville and Key Avenues and offers tennis courts, playgrounds and picnic space. Community vegetable gardens have their own membership arrangements.
At Kelly Avenue and Lochlea Road, the Mount Washington Arboretum provides a smaller landscape of trees, planted areas and a pond. The Preservation Trust founded it in 1999 on a former apartment site damaged by a 1979 hurricane and continues to maintain it. Use the neighborhood association and Trust for current activities: their parks are different destinations, with different entrances and arrangements for taking part.
