Neighborhood
Irvington
Irvington combines varied housing and a Frederick Avenue business corridor with local community-development and tree-planting work.
Irvington is a large southwest Baltimore City neighborhood surrounded by smaller communities including Saint Josephs, Tremont, Yale Heights, Oaklee and Saint Agnes. Live Baltimore describes detached houses, traditional rowhouses, duplexes and apartments around a compact business district. The housing variety makes the individual block especially important when getting to know the area.
Cooperative Community Development, based at 4004 Frederick Avenue, provides a local organizing contact. Its work connects urban agriculture with housing, commercial revitalization and community space. Its H.E.A.R.T. goals include homeownership and affordable housing, economic independence, agricultural access, retail revitalization and tranquil community spaces.
There is also a documented history of residents shaping the streetscape. Blue Water Baltimore’s June 2022 account describes working with the Irvington Community Association and CCD on street trees. Residents helped choose species or opted out of planting in front of their homes. That is a specific example of local participation, and the organizations’ current information is the place to look for the next opportunity to take part.
