Neighborhood
Hoes Heights
Hoes Heights preserves a history connected to Grandison Hoe’s farm, while the nearby Roland Water Tower remains a recognizable meeting point for surrounding communities.
Follow the farm’s history
Hoes Heights has a history that predates the surrounding suburban development. The Maryland Historical Society library’s research identifies Grandison Hoe’s property on an 1857 map of Hampden and documents his farming household in the 1860 census. Those records offer a more grounded introduction than treating the neighborhood simply as an extension of Hampden or Roland Park.
Look toward the water tower
At Roland Avenue, University Parkway and Evans Chapel Road, the Roland Water Tower provides a conspicuous nearby landmark. The community foundation describes the completed exterior restoration and removal of the protective fence. The tower’s history as water infrastructure is separate from any permission to enter or climb its interior.
Connect through community events
Friends of the Roland Water Tower publishes gatherings and ways to help with events around the tower. Its announcements distinguish concerts, play days and weather cancellations. Use the latest dated notice for a future visit; the organization brings neighboring communities together without changing their separate neighborhood identities.
