Neighborhood
Gay Street
Gay Street combines rowhomes and apartment housing near Madison Square, with service from Pratt’s new Johnston Square library branch.
Gay Street’s neighborhood includes both rowhomes and multifamily apartment buildings, according to Live Baltimore. The City boundary places it beside Johnston Square, Middle East, Oldtown and Oliver. Its compact setting brings several distinct east Baltimore community names close together.
Two local green-space references
City park mapping places portions of Madison Square and Eden and Eager within the neighborhood. Those small urban park spaces offer a different scale from the larger destination parks farther east. Their names are useful local landmarks when following a community announcement or learning the surrounding streets.
A new library serving the area
Pratt’s Johnston Square branch opened on November 10, 2025, at 1132 Greenmount Avenue, at the corner of Biddle Street, and explicitly includes Gay Street among the neighborhoods it serves. It provides collections, public computers, printing and study rooms. One practical detail is easy to miss: Pratt says the on-site parking lot is private, so visitors should use the branch’s current street-parking or bicycle-parking guidance.
