Neighborhood

Franklintown

Franklintown’s planned village layout and mill history distinguish it from the separate Franklintown Road neighborhood farther east.

Franklintown is a historic village at Baltimore City’s western edge, adjoining Dickeyville, Wakefield and Gwynns Falls/Leakin Park. Live Baltimore describes older detached homes alongside apartment housing. It is a separate neighborhood from Franklintown Road, even though the road name links the two places.

The Maryland Historical Trust’s district account traces the village to William H. Freeman’s 1832 plan: an oval wooded center surrounded by radiating lots, with mill and commercial buildings near Dead Run. The former Franklin Turnpike connected the village with Baltimore. That history helps explain its winding streets and buildings arranged differently from the city’s familiar rowhouse grid.

A visit can pair an exterior look at the village with a separately planned park activity. Nearby, Carrie Murray Nature Center lists guided hikes, nature stories and other public programs with registration information. Historic homes and former mill buildings are not automatically open attractions, and park programs have their own meeting locations.
