Fells Point

Fells Point’s early merchant houses and nearby Black maritime history give its waterfront streets a focus beyond dining. Begin with the Robert Long House and the Douglass-Isaac Myers museum.

Fells Point’s waterfront, narrow streets and smaller houses preserve the scale of a port neighborhood within the modern city. The area’s story includes merchants, shipbuilding, Black maritime workers and successive immigrant communities. A useful introduction moves between individual buildings and the water instead of treating the neighborhood only as a dining destination.

A merchant’s house makes the early port tangible

The Robert Long House dates to 1765. The Preservation Society connects it with a Pennsylvania merchant who developed an import-and-export business in the growing waterfront settlement. Its restoration and use as a house museum provide a way to consider domestic life alongside the docks and warehouses that supported trade. The operator’s page retains old tour notices, so contact the society about access instead of relying on a fixed opening schedule.

Look closely at the brickwork

The society’s architectural account identifies Flemish-bond brickwork on the Ann Street facade, including glazed brick ends that catch the light. Details such as the pent roof and dormer also connect the house with Mid-Atlantic building traditions. Those features give an exterior walk a specific focus without requiring entry into private homes or other buildings.

Follow the Black maritime history

The nearby Frederick Douglass-Isaac Myers Maritime Park and Museum interprets Douglass’s Baltimore years and the history of African American maritime work. Living Classrooms provides separate information for self-guided admission, group tours and the Bearman Gallery. Choose the museum arrangement that fits your visit rather than assuming every waterfront institution keeps weekend hours.

Pratt identifies Fells Point among the communities served by the Orleans Street branch. Located at 1303 Orleans Street, it offers public computers and printing. The branch’s service area and the official Fells Point boundary describe different geographies.
