A recreation center with a musical name
The renovation architect, GWWO, traces the center to 1947 as the first recreation center serving Black residents in East Baltimore during segregation. It honors Baltimore-born jazz drummer William Henry “Chick” Webb. A 1949 renovation converted an unused icehouse into a pool and basketball court. The renovated center reopened on April 16, 2026, with an expanded gym, a recording studio and displays interpreting its history. Current program registration still comes from the recreation operator.
