Curtis Bay Industrial Area

Curtis Bay Industrial Area is part of Baltimore’s working waterfront, where freight activity and community concerns about coal dust shape public decisions.

Curtis Bay Industrial Area is distinct from the neighboring residential Curtis Bay community on the City map. Fairfield Area also meets its boundary. The relationship between industrial operations and nearby homes is central to understanding this part of the waterfront.

Freight handling and environmental controls

In July 2025, Maryland’s Department of the Environment issued a new operating permit for the CSX Curtis Bay facility, which handles coal and other dry materials. The permit required a windscreen around coal piles and improved water-spraying equipment to reduce dust. These are documented requirements; the announcement alone does not verify that every improvement is complete.

Residents in the public record

December 2024 comments from community and environmental organizations identify the terminal at 1910 Benhill Avenue and describe their requested pollution controls. The subsequent state announcement credits public engagement in the permit process. For readers following the area, current agency records provide a useful way to track specific facilities and decisions, while keeping required measures, completed work and community requests distinct.
