Uptown Towson

Uptown Towson brings the county-seat streets, a substantial public library and layers of local history into the same central district.

Read the town through its streets

Uptown Towson is the central district within the wider Towson community. The Chamber-sponsored Towson Walking Tour gives its familiar streets a historical framework, linking the courthouse, former tavern site, library and other landmarks. York Road and Pennsylvania Avenue meet beside the former Baltimore County Bank building, which opened in 1926. Washington Avenue has another concentration of historic civic buildings facing the courthouse.

The tour can be followed selectively. Looking at a few buildings around the crossroads reveals how banking, government and hospitality helped shape this part of Towson. The online entries also make the history available without entering buildings that now have other uses.

A public place on York Road

The Towson Branch at 320 York Road adds a current destination. Alongside books and computers, it lists public 3D printers, Chinese- and Spanish-language collections, study rooms, meeting rooms and a children’s play area. Parking is in a paid garage. This combination of everyday library use and streetside history gives an Uptown visit a useful focus beyond a shopping or dining stop.
