Route 40 / Catonsville Corridor
The Route 40 and Catonsville corridor brings together Baltimore National Pike’s transportation history, older residential communities and services along Frederick Road.
Two roads with different local roles
The Route 40 corridor through the Catonsville area includes Baltimore National Pike, while many familiar community destinations use Frederick Road addresses. The historic survey of Winters Lane records a consequential change when West Baltimore National Pike was built in 1942. Construction removed houses and divided parts of the older community, while social connections persisted across the new road.
That history adds a human dimension to a corridor often understood mainly through traffic and commercial frontage. The highway and adjacent neighborhoods developed through different periods, and their relationship cannot be read from the road number alone. Winters Lane’s documented history is a useful starting point for exploring those changes.
A place to follow the local story
The Catonsville library is at 1100 Frederick Road. Its local-history collection, meeting room and recording studios support research and creative work as well as ordinary library use. The address also clarifies the distinction between the library’s community setting and the Route 40 frontage. For a visit, select the actual destination before planning travel through the wider corridor.
