Monkton

Monkton’s restored railway station and rail-trail crossing make its transportation history part of an outdoor visit today.

A station at the heart of the visit

Monkton’s railway heritage is easy to locate at the restored 1898 train station, 1820 Monkton Road. The building now houses a museum and park ranger station beside the Torrey C. Brown Rail Trail. DNR’s station page lists museum access by appointment, so an outdoor trail outing and an indoor museum visit need different planning.

From passenger route to public trail

The state’s rail-trail history explains how the Northern Central Railway connected communities with Baltimore, York, Harrisburg and points beyond. Damage from Tropical Storm Agnes in 1972 ended operation on this section. The state later acquired the abandoned corridor, and the first trail section opened in 1984. Railroad markers and other remnants along the route help connect the present landscape with that earlier use.

The current trail page welcomes walkers, runners, cyclists, horseback riders and leashed pets on the former railway corridor. Monkton provides one identifiable place to join it, but the trail continues through other communities in both directions. Treat the station as a local starting point, then choose a turnaround suitable for your outing rather than assuming a trip must cover the full route.
