Gunpowder Falls Area
The Gunpowder Falls area is a collection of river corridors and park sections, each with its own entrances, landscape and visitor arrangements.
A park system with several starting points
Gunpowder Falls State Park covers several distinct areas rather than one enclosed site. DNR provides separate maps for the Hereford, Sweet Air, central river, Hammerman and Dundee Creek areas. The headquarters is in the restored mill at Jerusalem Mill Historic Village, with office visits by appointment. Sending every outing to that address would miss the geography of the larger park.
Match the landscape to the outing
At Sweet Air, trails follow the Little Gunpowder landscape across Baltimore and Harford counties. Walking is permitted throughout the network, while cyclists and equestrians have route restrictions. Elsewhere, a former railway corridor offers a different kind of journey, and waterfront areas have their own seasonal rules.
The Friends of Jerusalem Mill add historical interpretation to the park experience through the mill village and its surviving buildings. A useful first decision is whether the day centers on a trail, water access or an interpreted historic site. Then select that section’s map and entrance. The shared Gunpowder name connects these places but does not make their access arrangements interchangeable.
