Freeland
Freeland provides a northern access point to the Torrey C. Brown Rail Trail, near its connection with Pennsylvania’s Heritage Rail Trail.
A northern trailhead
Freeland is one of the communities along the northern end of the Torrey C. Brown Rail Trail. DNR’s park guide identifies a parking access at 1072 Freeland Road. This gives an outing a specific start within the rural road network, rather than sending visitors to a general community label or the park headquarters in another part of the county.
The trail corridor follows the former Northern Central Railway to the Maryland–Pennsylvania line, with walking, cycling and horseback riding among its uses. The adjoining Pennsylvania route continues as the Heritage Rail Trail. A northbound outing from Freeland therefore places the state-line connection in context, while shorter out-and-back trips remain possible along the same shared corridor.
Read the railway landscape
The state’s trail history explains the route’s old mileage and whistle posts and its conversion to recreation after the railway era. For someone new to Freeland, the trailhead offers both a place to begin exploring and a visible link to the rural communities once served by trains. Use designated access and parking; the public corridor does not extend across neighboring farm fields or residential lots.
