Area

Franklin

Franklin’s local identity is closely tied to education, from a nineteenth-century academy to the library and schools of the Reisterstown area.

The academy behind a familiar name

In the Reisterstown area, Franklin is a name with a long educational history. The Digital Maryland collection assembled with the county library and Franklin High School traces Franklin Academy to 1820, when it began as a private boys’ school named for Benjamin Franklin. The institution later entered county control and developed into a public high school. Photographs, commencement programs, yearbooks and other artifacts preserve that evolution.

The old academy building subsequently became the Reisterstown library in 1961. That connection makes the history tangible: a place associated with formal schooling continues to serve public learning, although the library and today’s school campuses are separate destinations.

Local history and everyday library use

The Reisterstown Branch is at 21 Cockeys Mill Road. Its services include the Reisterstown Room local-history collection and Preservation Station, alongside books, computers and programs. Researchers can begin with the online academy collection before arranging time with local-history materials. Residents simply looking for a library can use the same address without treating an active school campus as a visitor attraction. Franklin’s story is one of institutions adapting as the surrounding community grew.
