North Point

North Point’s Dundalk-area battlefield preserves part of the 1814 defense of Baltimore, with an interpretive landscape and nearby library services carrying the name today.

North Point is closely associated with Baltimore’s defense during the War of 1812. In the Dundalk area, North Point State Battlefield preserves nine acres near North Point and Trappe roads. This compact historic site is separate from the much larger North Point State Park on the Chesapeake shoreline in Edgemere.

A landscape explaining the battle

Maryland militia confronted British troops here on September 12, 1814. The state’s battle history explains that the British dislodged the American force, while the resistance helped restore American morale before the successful defense at Fort McHenry. The encounter was important without being an American battlefield victory.

The site’s commemorative landscape uses meadow, woodland and a straight walkway to evoke the opposing positions. Wetlands, water gardens and permeable surfaces also handle stormwater. Historical interpretation and landscape management therefore share the same small public space.

A contemporary public resource

The North Point library is at 1716 Merritt Boulevard. At the October 2026 source check, its page still posted an HVAC-renovation closure, including the book drop, with limited bookmobile service in the parking lot. The branch’s live notice is the place to confirm reopening and interim service. Its ordinary study-room and computer listings should not be taken as available while that closure remains in effect.
