Baldwin
Baldwin connects the crossroads landscape of Long Green Valley with trails along the Little Gunpowder at Sweet Air.
A crossroads in an agricultural valley
The Long Green Valley Historic District record identifies Baldwin among the crossroads villages in a landscape of farms and rolling fields. The district’s houses, barns and small commercial buildings record changing construction and agricultural life from the eighteenth into the early twentieth century. Baldwin’s place in that wider landscape is useful context; the district boundary and today’s community or postal area are not identical.
Sweet Air’s trail network
The Sweet Air Area of Gunpowder Falls State Park uses the entrance address 2840 Dalton Bevard Road, Baldwin. It straddles Little Gunpowder Falls and therefore both Baltimore and Harford counties. DNR lists eighteen miles of trails, with hiking throughout and specific restrictions for bicycles and horses on the Cody Jean and Red Dot trails.
Choose the route from the area map before arriving. The park provides trails rather than horse rentals, and its instructions ask riders to stay off trails after heavy rainfall. This combination of agricultural history and a defined state-park entrance offers two useful ways to understand Baldwin without treating the whole countryside as public recreation land.
