Coldstream Homestead Montebello
Coldstream Homestead Montebello’s sloping streets, porch-front rowhouses and park connections frame a neighborhood with a distinctive early-twentieth-century history.
Coldstream Homestead Montebello, often shortened to CHM, is a residential neighborhood whose terrain gives its rowhouse streets a particular character. Houses can sit at different levels across the same street, while Hillen Road provides a strong route through the area. Clifton Park and Lake Montebello are nearby reference points in the wider landscape.
Read the slope and the porch fronts
The Maryland Historical Trust’s historic-district account describes development associated with the expansion of electric streetcars. Builders including Frank Novak and Theodore Cooke produced rows that combined urban housing with features then associated with suburban living: front lawns, open porches and more generous access to daylight.
The district includes a transition from longer, narrower rowhouse forms to wider houses influenced by Classical and Colonial Revival design. Tree-lined sidewalks, alleys and changes in elevation contribute to the street pattern. These details are more useful for understanding CHM than applying one architectural label to every block. The historic district and the City’s neighborhood map also serve different purposes and should be read at their own scales.
The school landmark and today’s school location differ
Baltimore City College’s hilltop building remains a recognizable local landmark. As checked in October 2026, City Schools reports that the campus is undergoing renovation. Students are learning at a temporary University of Baltimore location, which the university confirms for the 2026–27 school year. Use the school’s current directions for school business, and do not infer enrollment eligibility from a neighborhood address.
Use nearby institutions deliberately
The Waverly library branch explicitly names CHM among its service communities. A library visit and attention to the residential streets provide practical ways into the area while construction continues at the school landmark.
