Clifton Park

Clifton Park combines a historic mansion, public golf and a larger park landscape, with separate arrangements for tours, events and play.

Clifton Park brings several kinds of history and recreation into one landscape. Civic Works’ account of Clifton Mansion traces the house to Henry Thompson in 1802, later ownership by Johns Hopkins, and the City’s acquisition in 1895. Civic Works has cared for the mansion since 1993 and now uses it as its headquarters.

A historic building needs a planned visit

Civic Works presents the mansion as an event and community resource and points visitors toward organized tours. Check current arrangements before expecting interior access. Its history also acknowledges enslaved people associated with the property; the building’s story extends beyond architecture and its better-known owners.

Golf has its own access arrangements

Classic Five’s Clifton Park course opened in 1915 as Baltimore’s first public golf course and uses 2701 St. Lo Drive as its address. Book through the operator and follow course rules rather than treating fairways as general walking paths. The City neighborhood boundary places Clifton Park beside Darley Park, South Clifton Park, Mayfield and other communities, each with its own residential identity.
