Neighborhood

Broening Manor

Broening Manor mixes detached homes and rowhouses with Holabird Academy, whose 2020 building was designed to reduce energy use through solar and geothermal systems.

Broening Manor has detached homes with yards as well as rowhouses and apartments, according to Live Baltimore. The City map places it beside Medford, O’Donnell Heights, Graceland Park and Holabird Industrial Park. These neighboring places help explain the area’s mix of residential blocks and nearby employment land.

Holabird Academy on Imla Street

Baltimore City Public Schools lists Holabird Academy at 1500 Imla Street, serving pre-kindergarten through eighth grade. The Maryland Energy Administration documented its new building’s September 2020 opening. Solar panels, geothermal wells reaching 400 feet underground, and an efficient building envelope were part of a design intended to balance annual energy use with generation.

An older shared name

The City’s 2005 neighborhood plan discussed Broening Manor and Medford together as Southeastern. Today’s separate map labels offer a more specific way to describe those residential areas. The school adds a recognizable local institution, while its enrollment boundaries remain a matter for the district rather than something inferred from the neighborhood name.
