Neighborhood
Ashburton
Ashburton’s detached homes and civic history form part of the Liberty Heights corridor’s long residential story.
Ashburton is a west Baltimore City neighborhood adjoining Callaway-Garrison, East Arlington, Forest Park and Hanlon-Longwood. Live Baltimore highlights its substantial detached residences and its connections with Baltimore’s public life. Rowhouses are also part of the local housing mix, so the neighborhood includes more than one residential form.
Its twentieth-century history extends beyond architecture. A Maryland Historical Trust account of northwest Baltimore suburbanization describes Black professionals, officials and political figures moving into Ashburton from the late 1950s, associated with its Gold Coast nickname. That is historical context for the community, rather than a description of today’s residents or an indication that every house has a formal historic designation.
Ashburton is also one of the communities in Healthy Neighborhoods’ Liberty Heights corridor. The organization connects this group of neighborhoods with GO Northwest and property-improvement resources. For practical planning, begin with the particular address and the work you want to undertake; neighborhood participation does not establish that a specific property or applicant qualifies for a program.
